All-new Kurt Rosenwinkel band @ The Village Vanguard!

Yesterday marked the debut of an all-new band put together by Kurt Rosenwinkel. It features Andrew D’Angelo on alto sax and bass clarinet, Eric Revis on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. Kurt is playing both guitar and piano. The repertoire is also all-new and ranges from “Eyes So Beautiful As Yours” by Elmo Hope, over “Afro-Blue” by Mongo Santamaria to tunes by Jim Black and all-new Kurt compositions written specifically for this band.

After just a brief rehearsal in the afternoon the audience was able to witness, as Kurt put it, the “maiden voyage” of this band yesterday night. The sounds were exhilarating, to put it mildly, and we would strongly advice any Kurt fans currently in New York City to come down check out the band, as it is likely the only chance to hear it prior to 2011. If you manage to go then we would love to hear your thoughts and feedback right here. Hope to see you!

  1. Great show! Great arrangement of Afro Blue, it really got heavy and intense! The Elmo Hope tune was especially beautiful as well; great job on that piano Kurt.

  2. Went Friday night at 9 PM. Amazing band. Sounds NOTHING like Kurts previous bands and I mean that in a good way. They had raw power/energy that I haven’t heard coming from Kurt’s other bands. The music was very abstract yet free, and the sax player (Andrew D’Angelo) added another dimension to the band. I hope you guys decide to record this band!
