Kurt Rosenwinkel 2011 recap -> 2012
2011 started out @ the Village Vanguard – the most famous jazz club in the world – for what was a weeks worth of performances with Kurt’s “New Quartet” – a project devoted to (primarily Kurt’s) original music. The band was Aaron Parks on piano, Ben Street on bass and Ted Poor on drums.
After the Vanguard Kurt took his Standards Trio project to Lugano, Switzerland. This was the first date with one of the most exciting new additions to the jazz scene in a long while: the drummer Mr. Justin Faulkner. The New York Times spotlighted Justin and 4 other great drummers in this article.
The rest of 2011 found Kurt touring and performing with a variety of his projects. The Standards Trio went to Australia in June, and to Asia twice (Japan, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong). The New Quartet toured Europe in April/May, with a highlight being the 5 days in Paris at the Sunside club. Kurt performed a Solo concert at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and for 5 days in NYC with the 18-piece big band Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos (from the recording “Our Secret World“) at the Birdland Jazz Club.
In the fall of 2011 Kurt toured Europe again – this time with his Time Machine project featuring Andrew D’Angelo, Eric Revis and Nasheet Waits. This was the first time this project came together since it’s debut at the Village Vanguard in the summer of 2010. The New York Times reviewed the band here back then. Kurt is finishing off the year in Holland with 2 more Solo concerts – details of which you can find here.

In 2012 there’s already numerous plans for touring. In January Kurt will go to Israel for a workshop series at the Rimon School of Jazz, and soon after that he will do a number of dates in the US – some with the Standards Trio and some with the New Quartet. In the summer of 2012 Kurt will join John Scofield‘s new “Hollowbody Band” (alongside Peter Bernstein, Ben Street & Bill Stewart) project for what’s projected to be a tour of Europe.
On the recording front Kurt is working simultaneously on 3 new albums, which is about as much as we can say about this right now. Suffice to say that 2012 is already looking like a very exciting year for Kurt – and hopefully for his fans as well.
