Kurt Rosenwinkel Solo
In the past few years Kurt has been doing more and more Solo shows. It kinda started with a show we did on April 30, 2007 at the wonderful venue in Marlboro, NY called The Falcon, documented here on video. Then the following year Kurt played Solo at some venues in Holland and by this time Kurt really started to get more deeply into the idea and concept of playing Solo.
Then an amazing event happened in 2010 – The Monvinic Experience. An original (!) idea developed by the artistic director of Barcelona Jazz Festival, Joan Anton Cararach, Kurt Rosenwinkel was challenged to improvise his impression of 6 wonderful Spanish wines (2 white, 2 red & 2 desert wines) by trying to define their character in music – all on Solo guitar. The wines were first send to a restaurant in Paris (because Kurt was doing a series of concerts there) called Il Vino d’Enrico Bernardo, where the concept is you order the wine and then the chef makes a meal to match. So in this case a meal was prepared to test the wines so that Kurt could form somewhat of an impression prior to having to do the concert 2 weeks later at the famous Monvinic Wine bar in Barcelona – all as part of Barcelona Jazz Festival. The show was documented by WBGO and you can listen to the improvisations for each wine here.
Solo shows at the Montreal & Toronto Jazz Festivals followed in 2011 & 2012 respectively, by which time Kurt had radically altered his approach to playing Solo to encompass a much wider scope and palette, while retaining the basic premise of performing everything live. You are not going to go hear Kurt press a bunch of buttons to play pre-played and programmed stuff at his Solo shows – this is still one man balancing on a rope.
We are excited to have added 3 more Solo shows in the near future:
– May 25: Le Poisson Rouge in NYC
– May 28: Festival des guitares du monde en Abitibi-Témiscamingue in Canada
– July 7: Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland
Of course it is an open secret that Kurt Rosenwinkel is presently working on a new Solo album that we will be releasing on our Wommusic label in early 2014. These 3 shows are a chance to preview what you will hear on the album – or at least what you COULD hear on the album.
Hope you can make it to one of them!
