Kurt’s spring 2014
Following some great performances in Tokyo (Cotton Club) and Singapore (Esplanade) with the New Quartet feat. Aaron Parks (pia), Orlando Le Fleming (b) & Colin Stranahan (dr), Kurt is now back in Berlin preparing for another number of exciting performances coming up in the next months.
On April 15 & 16 Kurt will go to Skidmore College in upstate New York with his New Quartet for some workshops and a concert. The band is Aaron Parks (pia), Orlando Le Fleming (b) & Kendrick Scott (dr).
On April 17-20 Kurt will return to Chicago to perform at the Jazz Showcase with his Standards Trio project – this time feat. Orlando Le Fleming (b) & Jochen Rueckert (dr). As the name indicates he will mainly perform music from the great standards repertoire as exemplified on his 2009 Wommusic release “Reflections“. He will also give a masterclass at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago on April 19.
Then on April 22-27 Kurt returns to the storied Village Vanguard, this time with a Quartet consisting of Aaron Goldberg (pia), Orlando Le Fleming (b) & Kendrick Scott (dr). Allan Mednard will replace Kendrick on drums on April 23. Rumor has it that Kurt might bring back some songs from his album “The Remedy” which was recorded live at the Village Vanguard and which also featured Aaron Goldberg on piano.
Immediately following Kurt will return to Philadelphia to appear as a special guest with pianist & fellow native Philadelphian Orrin Evans‘s Captain Black Big Band cd release “Mothers Touch” on April 30 at World Cafe.
And this is not the only chance you have to hear Kurt with a large ensemble in the coming months: Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) & Wynton Marsalis + drummer Ali Jackson(who toured and recorded with Kurt on Kurt’s 2005 album “Deep Song“) will host Kurt and another native Philadelphian – bassist Christian McBride – on May 23 & 24, and will write new arrangements of their compositions for the occasion. This is going to be spectacular! We can also reveal that Kurt will return to Barcelona Jazz Festival this fall on October 30 withOrquestra Jazz de Matosinhos, the wonderful Portuguese Big Band with whom he recorded his 2010 Wommusic album “Our Secret World“. Here a great video of Kurt’s well-known compostion “Zhivago” with OJM from that same album.
After the Rose Theater dates with JLCO Kurt will go back to Europe with his New Quartet this time feat. Taylor Eigsti (pia), Orlando Le Fleming (b) & Kendrick Scott (dr). So far performances in Hungary, Denmark, Sweden and Germany have been confirmed. You can find an updated list of Kurt’s upcoming performances here – keep checking back as we keep adding more dates. And Kurt’s New Quartet has also been confirmed for the Newport Jazz Festival in what is the legendary festivals 60th anniversary. More info about all the incredible acts on this years festival here.
Kurt also sat in with Robert Glasper’s band on March 22 in Berlin at a venue called Gretchen. If you were there then please share your photos & impressions either on Twitter or via Kurt’s facebook page.
