add4 14125@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
So i guess i am (very) late to the party, but in case Kurt still has any interest in this here is something that i think could have interested him 8 years ago.

I was planning my pedalboard, and when i wrote 'rat' in the list, i remembered that i usually never like the rat with my volume pot all the way up, and wondered if i could find a way to integrate the effect of having the pickups volume down in the pedal, that would be great.
Then i remembered that it's a commonly done mod for the fuzz face in order to provide subtler shades of distortion.

Quoting the excellent article of R.G. Keen: 'the technology of the fuzz face' (http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/fuzzface/fffram.htm )

Another (Mod) is to connect a 50K pot, again as a series resistor, in series with the input of the circuit, before the 2.2uF input capacitor.

If that last one seems a little odd, think back to what I said about the low input impedance. With a low input impedance, the input loads a guitar significantly; the base can only move a few tens of millivolts before cutting off or saturating the first transistor. If you put a resistor in series with the guitar pickup, it raises the apparent source impedance of the pickup, making it look more like a current source (albeit a tiny one) and less like a voltage source. A signal from a current source lets the input of the effect seek it's own voltage level, and merely supplies a varying current. This can be much more linear than a voltage source drive. As a result, the variable resistor allow you to radically clean up the distortion that the FF produces, producing subtle shades of softer distortion.

In effect, the output mod is a "more" control, and the input mod is a "less" control. As you would expect, the two added controls can interact to produce many shades of distortion.

that mod is more simply explained at having another 'volume' pot as the one in the guitar, in front of the pedal.

So a simple pot wired in series at the entrance of a pedal
- lowers the input volume to the user's liking, allowing for better control on the distortion produced by the pedal
- solves impedance problems linked to the pickup (if there is one, the input of the rat should theoretically be impervious to impedance problems)

which is exactly what i'd like to have in front of the rat, while i keep my guitar's output pot where i want it.

This remembered me kurt's question from 2007 on gearslutz:

also a related question: my guitars outputs are too high and i dont like how they interact with my distortion box (rat). can i use some kind of d.i. box like an atty or radial jdv to sculpt how the guitar feeds the distortion box?

...

i also am playing a new guitar and i want to have some flexibility with how it affects the RAT pedal. i have a feeling that its not only a question of volume but also of impedance or ohms from the pickup.

i think the solution might ultimately be different pickups, but for now i want a work around. i dont want to just lower the volume knob.

So in case it helps, i think it might be as easy as doing the mod i just mentioned. Of course i haven't tried it myself (yet) and i have about one thousand other pedal related stuff i want to do before that (babies makes you late in every personal project you had).
But it think it would be worth trying and it could be as simple as using a simple pot, crocodile 'cables' and 2 jacks and put info in front of the rat, or have someone do the mod for you, or ask someone to build a rat with this mod.
I know i'll try this when i'll build one for myself, with a few other mods to make the pedal more useable in a 'jazz' situation.

Anyway i guess the question is completely out of scope now that Kurts rig is digital but in case it's still helpful, and/or for the sake of intellectual curiosity i thought i'd share.

Peace
Arnaud

kurtisrosenwinkel 6905@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi Kurt, are most of your voicings derived from drop2, 3, 4 2-3 and 2-4?

What I mean is - do you just learn these stock voicings first, then alter them as you want to? For example, flatten the 5th to get b5 chord

Thanks a lot

no thats not how i learned. i would take a given chord and try to figure out as many ways to play it on the neck, then improvise with these voicings to find melodies and make connections. after a while of figuring out lots of different ways to play lots of chords i managed to cover the basics of what you call "drop 2" etc. i never studied them in isolation.

kurtisrosenwinkel 6901@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Have you found a 'building block' of musical sentence that gives weight and depth to its sound? I'm looking of it as a kind of system for building melodic lines within the phrase. The idea is to make it sound like a phrase and not like a stream of notes.. not sure if it's clear, but i hear that in your playing more than in a lot of other people's so i'm asking away.
I've been looking for answers to this question for a long time. I think some answers are in the use of triads or pieces of them in the phrase. Sometimes not diatonic triads, only with one or two notes of the scale/chord i'm thinking of.

Are you using other minor scales over a major sound? i've been using that a few times and was struck by how it reminded me of a kind of sound i associate with your playing, so i'm curious about the other uses of melodic minor and harmonic minor on a major context too.

Passing chords : how do you build them, from what material? at the moment i'm working on diatonic substitutions and really dig the sound of that, i imagine that i could approach the subs from the previous and next degrees, and also tonicise them using V or sub Vs.

see above

see above

see above

kurtisrosenwinkel 6900@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
This is sort of a lazy man's question, because the answers are there for me if I just transcribe some of the licks, but...

I listened to "Backup" from the 2011 Jarasum Jazz Festival. Your solo started off bluesy and progressed to more interesting lines. Since a blues is one of the simplest templates for reharming, what are some less-obvious ideas you could use over the changes (aside from putting a II-V before a chord change, or a tritone sub of the II-V before a chord change... i.e. F#-7 to B7 to Bb7)?

try cadences- progressions that go different places. you could think of these as ways to construct your lines, or ways to improvise chordally...the trick is practicing in time and figuring out ways to resolve to the important chords of the blues so that it makes sense. but everything inbetween can be explored in many ways. this is one of them.

arewolfe 6891@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hey Jorge, I took your email address from another thread and sent you what I have... not the actual voicings (haven't scanned those yet) but just the chord symbols from one part where Kurt is slowly playing a chord on each beat and discussing the concept of "strong beat, weak beat."

yaclaus 6871@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Firstly, I am flattered that Kurt with his busy schedule to answer on some of the questions asked here. Some people seem very demanding and expect thorough and definitive answers from Kurt.

Well my question:

How do you approach time and how have you practiced time?

best from Claus

monk 6870@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi Kurt, are most of your voicings derived from drop2, 3, 4 2-3 and 2-4?

What I mean is - do you just learn these stock voicings first, then alter them as you want to? For example, flatten the 5th to get b5 chord

Thanks a lot

Gia5 6868@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Would you, if you don't mind, name one or two of your favorite painters, one or two books that you really liked or that inspired you, and one or two "classical" composers/compositions that you particulary love? Thanks for being here with us fans.
Cheers.
G.
