fakejake 13742@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Thanks jared for the suggestion!
My main amp right now is a polytone mini brute III, which also has a 15'' speaker, like the wholetone.
However, I was looking for a more portable amp.
After some more consideration, I ended up ordering the Mambo Wedge Combo two days ago.
It'll take about 3 weeks to arrive, and already I'm really excited about it!

jorgemg1984 13715@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have a Mambo 10 and have played Princetons and Fenders regularly. My mambo has an Electro Voice Force 10 which is an improvement from the stock Beta 10.

They are very different amps. A princeton would be underpowered for a lot of my live sound needs... And I would need a mid control in order to make it usable for jazz (to mid scooped stock). But if you like the Fender sound... maybe it can be built with more headroom, 30w, 40w?

The mambo is a "jazz amp" - baxandall eq (no mid scoop), closed back ported design, excellent digitaql reverb, fx loop, very loud, sounds like a perfect Polytone. The weakest part for me is the stock speaker, with the EV is simply wonderful. Shoot me an e-mail if you want mambo clips.

It's more about you deciding if you like the fender sound or the jazz amp sound.

PS - I have used a Fender preamp in front of the Mambo, it works well but part of the fender sound comes from an open back jensen speaker cab and the mambo is far from that. For a Fender sound in a cheap light package modelling is the ideal solution (it's what I do).

Poparad 13713@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have a friend (Jack Zucker) who used to play through a Mambo. He raved about it, and it sounded plenty warm and organic to me. IIRC, he put some kind of Fender-ish preamp pedal before the Mambo and was able to get a warm, buttery clean tone out of it (a Fender without the shrillness that's sometimes an issue).

fakejake 13709@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi all,

I saved up for a new amp, which I'm really excited about.
I tried a lot of different models over the last years, and for several reasons, narrowed my choice down to either a handbuild Princeton Reverb or a Mambo Amp.
I know that those are pretty different amps, but both are small and lightweight, have a 10'' speaker (which I like) and are great for clean sounds.
Has anybody been able to compare those two, or has extensive experience with either one and is able to share the pros + cons?
I feel that the Princeton might be more versatile and also great for Blues, Rock, Pop etc., but probably also lacking a bit in headroom.
The Mambo should be more suited for straight ahead Jazz, and is even smaller and lighter, but might not be as warm and organic sounig as the Princeton.
Let me say that I t played both on different occasions but never side by side. Also I'm not really looking for any other amp suggestions. For me it is going to be either one or the other right now.
I'd be greatful for any comments!

surfinboy 12120@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Don't rule out Mesa/Boogie - they've got an updated amp called the 5:25 Express Plus that can go from 5-15-25 watts. I haven't played one yet but I'm dying to. 4 channels, but it looks pretty uncluttered and easy to use. The "clean" and "blues" channels in particular sound like they have some great warm clean sounds, and the blues channel sounds warmer. It's relatively small and light, and the wattage changing is really useful, especially if you want to go from more headroom to more breakup.

Basile865 12117@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Whats your budget?

Fuchs makes really great stuff. If you're unfamiliar with him, listen to Jimmy Herring. He uses their amps.

Personally I cant get enough of the classic Marshall series (super lead plexi, 50 watt plexi and jtm45). They dont overdrive unless you crank the hell out of them which I dont go for, but their cleans are fat and middy. Any good pedal will make great tone through these amps. I have no issue with the reissues either, I own one and love it. A used jtm45 shouldnt set you back more then a grand roughly, if you can find one.

The current twin reverbs with the jensen c12k speakers sound great. I had one previously with eminence speakers I really didnt care for but the jensens sound excellent in my opinion.

I have vintage 30's mated up with my plexi and theyre wonderful in my opinion. Not sharp or icey, but warm and full. They are however, in a marshall mf280 cab, which ive read is a vintage 30 tweaked for more low end? The mode four cabs were targeted towards drop tune rock guys but i love it for clean.

This is my super lead plexi with that cab and a strat with humbuckers.
http://youtu.be/-JxV9BPXSwQ

My vote is for a jtm45 and some kind of dirt pedal

jorgemg1984 12080@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Floating I agree with you but I disagree on the cause. The problem is not they're clean... Some OD pedals sound great into a clean platform like a twin or a polytone. The problem with an AER is that is a full range amp - those extra frequencies (5k-20k) and the whole voicing of the thing make sit sound hideous for guitar.

I agree that if you're willing to use pedals just try to find a great clean tone. Then use pedals for OD.

Floatingbridge 12078@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I disagree... For example distortion, octave and others going through AER amps sound horrible.
I've heard this set up up close multiple times. These amps being pushed that way don't sound like other amps breaking up in that natural way. These pricey hifi little gems are for those committed to a clean sound or delivering fidelity during boosting those flat mid centric little godins... something feels weird about the whole thing, like a janitor with an ascot or something.

rustyair 10540@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Thank you for the suggestion.
I was just playing with a new effect pedal and something happened I guess. It's probably my fault...I saw a little spark and it wouldn't turn on . :(
I thought it would be really expansive to fix it because last time I tried to fix a dead Polytone, the reapir guy told me $400...and I only paid $250 for that...lol but I just got an email from Mr.Henriksen and he said he will fix it for free even thought I bought it used from a friend. Great customer service!

docbop 10538@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Henrikson are really solid amps, but everything breaks so why not fix it, or you just want another amp?

jhall8291 10537@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have a Fender Super Champ XD 2 and love it for a practice amp, but it's gig worthy too. Its runs on 2 6V6 power tubes and is either 15 or 20 watts. It has some modeling stuff, but you can bypass all of that. Amp 2 on the modeling portion actually sounds great though(the bypass setting is more of a classic Fender Deluxe clean, but with the "amp 2" model with a little bit of gain I can get a good modern sound a la Kurt), and one of the reverb settings sounds really nice. I got mine new at Sam Ash for under $200. I think they had just come out with a newer version of that model and it was on closeout. I also previously had a Fender Pro Jr. which was pretty nice as well; though I prefer the Super Champ. Pro Jr has no reverb if that's a concern.
If you can find one cheap, a Polytone Mini Brute is another great option that could be much more than just a practice amp. I got one for under $200 several years back and it has been insanely reliable. It was my main gigging amp for over a year and it basically stayed in the trunk of my car the entire time, no problems.
