Matt 12775@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/ <p>the miller/goodrick book is more about expressing a sonority with 6 notes, deconstructed into 2 triads. they're all rootless, so you remove the root and then construct triads from the remaining notes (ie Cmja7 would deconstruct to Dmin and Emin triads). that's as far as i got out of that book. those berklee dudes are into having every permutations of every sequence, etc written out and down. not sure i feel i need all of that personally. </p>

You could do most of the legwork writing out the sequences (and probably should anyway, to grasp the concepts). The basic idea is to be very fluent in voice leading, no matter which chord type or chord progression you're dealing with. I would definitely not pay $500 for it. </p>

He just spends a lot of time being very meticulous about writing out all the combinations. All scale sequences, all chord voicing types. The basic idea is to take a voicing type and moving it through a scale in 2nds, 3rds, or 4ths (which in the opposite direction create 7ths, 6ths, and 5ths). </p>

It was a great/strange experience. He is so logical and practical(and dry). He talked about everything in those clips and when I would have a question he would look at me like, you know what the theory is just work on it for a long time and get it under your fingers...simple. I left kinda feeling like not much happened but when I listen to the lesson recording every minute is golden. Also having one of your music heros tell you that you sound great then invite you to a jam session is priceless and very motivating. Super nice guy. </p>

The piece is going towards a period, or a resting point of thought, like speaking. That section of the piece is speaking IV-ish. It's got some adjectives that make the point. So they belong to IV. That's the way I see it, and it allows me to choose the ii V as one of any number of options.<br /> When I'm playing though, it might feel like a I7 if that's all I want to say; if the phrase ends there. In those situations, I wouldn't be hearing the changes in between, just kinda modal IM modal I7. Most of the time though, it's going to IV.<br /> Hope I'm not coming across as an incoherent nut...<br /> David </p>

I've heard great things about Ted Greene as a teacher, but I never really came across any recordings of him. I should check on that. I've tried to fool myself by going through all the exercises but it doesn't stick with me. I learn voicings better by experimenting and playing around on the neck and visualizing where each chord tone or tension is, and moving a specific note to get a different sound, voicing, etc, and then figuring out what that voicing is enharmonically. (C7 = F#7 b5 b9 = Abmaj9 #5 = C#diminished 7 major 7 = etc etc). </p> <p>Here's an exercise you can do to get yourself more familiar with slash chords: Get a pen and paper or use your computer to write it down.</p> <p>Start with a major triad: Write out all twelve chords that will result when you put a different note in the bass. I'll use C as the triad. This particular chord makes it easy to play this exercise on the instrument so you can hear how different each of the 12 chords sounds just by putting a different note in the bass. (G, C, E on strings 3, 2, 1 makes it easy to play all 12 possibilities).</p> <p>1. E in the bass. Notes in the chord = E, G, C, E. Chord created: C over E<br /> 2. F in the bass. Notes in the chord = F, G, C, E. Chord created: Fsus2 major7<br /> 3. F# in the bass. Notes in the chord = F#, G, C, E. Chord created: debatable... haha<br /> 4. G in the bass: Notes in the chord = G, G, C, E. Chord created: C over G<br /> 5. Ab in the bass. Notes in the chord = Ab, G, C, E. Chord created: Ab maj7 #5<br /> 6<br /> 7<br /> 8<br /> 9<br /> 10<br /> 11<br /> 12</p> <p>^^ fill in the blanks... you can do this exercise with any chord to come up with interesting stuff. You can do it with 7th chords. You can even put triads over triads, or 7th chords over 7th chords. And of course you're going to get different sounds depending on the order of the notes in the voicing. At some point you'll want a piano player to help you out LOL. </p>
