fakejake 14470@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi all,
Since my comping skills are very very basic, I decided to set some time aside and work exclusively on comping, both on rhythms and on voicings.
Being an amateur player I don't have a lot of time for practicing, so I want to work on the most basic and most useful and applicable things to become a well rounded player.

What would you say are the most useful voicings to work on?
I have the drop 2 voicings on the high and middle strings pretty much down, and this is what I mostly use for comping in band situations. Drop 3s I only know with the bass on the low E string. For comping in duo situations I mix Drop 3s with drop 2s on the middle strings.

Do you think it makes sense to learn drop 2s on the low strings as well, and drop 3s with the bass on the A string? Do you guys use that in your everyday playing? Some of the voicings (e.g. with the 7th in the bass) don't sound that pretty

Also, where do I go from there? Is there any other type of chord construction (i.e. drop) that is common to use for most standard tunes?

I'd be very interested in your suggestions and experiences!
Cheers!

gleepglop 11749@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Along the lines of jorge's suggestion: to improve your ability to hear inner voices, play a three-note chord on the piano or guitar, and work on moving just one or two voices:

* move upper note, listen to lower two
* move lower note, listen to upper two
* move upper and lower, listen to middle
* keep upper and lower static, move middle voice

This helps your ear practice home in on particular voices. Singing helps, too, as always.

Neither 11182@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Thanks Benny for your answer.
I've got Andrew Green's book. It's a great book but it talks about a much more traditional comping than Mike Moreno plays.
I've got the Tim Lippincott video about modern Jazz Guitar (Harmony), and it's one of the best thing I saw on the subject.
But my question is about the "real thing" great players play (voicing, rythm and harmony), about transcription of what they play.
I search for this kind of thing, but for a modern guitar player :
http://www.timfischermusic.com/lessons/dowar.pdf

smoke 7762@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I was listening to Kurt's 2006 NGW clinic today and was really struck by his demonstration of putting a chord on every beat of a tune. It kind of sounds like stride piano and I have recordings of Ted Greene doing something along those same lines. It really sounds amazing.

If anyone has ever checked out any of Ted Greene's comping exercises on the website set up to distribute his lessons, there are quite a few similarities to what Kurt plays in the example. I am curious if anyone has checked them out and what you think of them? I wonder if Kurt ever studied w/ Ted?

If you haven't checked them out, there are some really great ways to expand your vision of harmony on the guitar. Here is a really nice example on the tune 'When Sunny Gets Blue'

http://tedgreene.com/images/lessons/comping/WhenSunnyGetsBlue_Comp.pdf

http://tedgreene.com/teaching/comping.asp

Just tossing it out there in case anyone digs that sound.

silverwater 3644@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
One concept Ive developed using this shape:

x8889x (or xx3344) [fm11]

...I've found that min7, dom7, and maj7 chords each have 4 of these that that can be played without any "avoid" notes. To find them, I just go by the note in the highest voice.

- For min7 chords, the note in the highest voice can be the b7, R, b3, or 4th, like this for Dmin7:

(x5556x) (x7778x) (xx7788) (xx991010)

See how the top voices are F, G, C, and D?

- For Dom7 chords, the highest voice can be the b7, R, 4th, or the 5th.

- For Maj7 chords, the highest voice can be the R, 2, 5, or the 6th.

The min7 ones give you a dorian sound, the dom7 ones give you a sus4 sound, and the maj7 ones give you a lydian sound.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The other things that I do with quartal harmony:

- Be able to play up and down the neck through the major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales.

- Learn all the inversions ( I generally stick to 3 note voicings for these)

- Take a tune, for example "Solar". You know what major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales can fit over these chords. Start somewhere on the neck with a quartal voicing. Move up to the next available voicing, using half notes. The notes that you have available are the notes that you'd be playing if you were playing a single note solo. Don't worry about beating on "avoid" notes, or don't worry that you're not playing enough chord tones to outline the changes. It's not going to matter. The bass player will be outlining the changes anyways. The point here is to be musical, not to outline exactly a bunch of ii-V-Is that have been played enough already over the years.

Sandemose 696@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Neither, my absolut favorite contemporary classical music piece is Allan Petterssons symf.no.7 (dir. Antal Dorati). Its quite traditional and insanly beutiful. I also love, Schnittke, Kurtag, Penderecki (oh my God what a monster composer), and that composer who wrote Rothko chapell (I´ll have to look it up).

Someone said that if Kurt would be an interval, he would be a fourth. For me, Kurt is a fifth, haha :). ACT would be major sixth since he seems so happy and positve all the time. I sometimes feel pathetic and sorry for myself = minor third. :)

Regarding quarter leaps: this is a arpeggio involvning major seconds together with perfect fourths:

I use a quite awkward (<--thats a awkward spelling, right?) fingering, that might not work for everybody. The code sequence is fourth/second

Gm7
Starting on G up a fourth, starting on C up a fourth starting on F
--------------------------5--------------- ------------------------------10------------ -----------------------------------15-------
-------------------3--5------------------- ----------------------8--10---------------- -------------------------13--15-----------
----------------2------------------------ -------------------7------------------------ ---------------------12---------------------
-------------5--------------------------- ---------------10--------------------------- ----------------15-------------------------
------3--5-------------------------------- -------8--10------------------------------- -------13--15-----------------------------
---3--------------------------------------- ----8--------------------------------------- ---13--------------------------------------
F:2 1 3 4 1 2 4 3 F: similie F: similie

I do a slight hand position shift to make room for my 2:nd finger on the low E-string. The reason why I do this is because I find it easier to play sequences of notes, like ostinatos when using one finger per note, instead of tweaking the finger and barring the joint of the finger. Sometimes I just have to bar, and then Ill do it. I just try to avoid it.

Code sequence second/fourth:

Gmaj7 * = b9 (Maj7b9?) * = b9, and also the #5 on the last one to the right
-----------------------2----- ------------------------4*-------- -------------------------------9----- -----------------------------------11----
--------------------5-------- ---------------------7---------- ---------------------------12------- -------------------------------14---------
--------------2--4---------- --------------4--6---------------- --------------------9--11----------- --------------------11--13*-------------
-----------2----------------- ------------4---------------------- -----------------9------------------ ----------------11------------------------
--------5-------------------- ----------7------------------------ -------------12--------------------- -----------14-----------------------------
--3--5---------------------- --5--7--------------------------- ---10--12-------------------------- --12--14---------------------------------

I dont know about you guys but I think the b9 works in the context of the sequence. Im not writing out a fingering, I havent thought about it yet. Hope there´s something intresting in there...

Best, Sandemose
