add4 14125@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
So i guess i am (very) late to the party, but in case Kurt still has any interest in this here is something that i think could have interested him 8 years ago.

I was planning my pedalboard, and when i wrote 'rat' in the list, i remembered that i usually never like the rat with my volume pot all the way up, and wondered if i could find a way to integrate the effect of having the pickups volume down in the pedal, that would be great.
Then i remembered that it's a commonly done mod for the fuzz face in order to provide subtler shades of distortion.

Quoting the excellent article of R.G. Keen: 'the technology of the fuzz face' (http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/fuzzface/fffram.htm )

Another (Mod) is to connect a 50K pot, again as a series resistor, in series with the input of the circuit, before the 2.2uF input capacitor.

If that last one seems a little odd, think back to what I said about the low input impedance. With a low input impedance, the input loads a guitar significantly; the base can only move a few tens of millivolts before cutting off or saturating the first transistor. If you put a resistor in series with the guitar pickup, it raises the apparent source impedance of the pickup, making it look more like a current source (albeit a tiny one) and less like a voltage source. A signal from a current source lets the input of the effect seek it's own voltage level, and merely supplies a varying current. This can be much more linear than a voltage source drive. As a result, the variable resistor allow you to radically clean up the distortion that the FF produces, producing subtle shades of softer distortion.

In effect, the output mod is a "more" control, and the input mod is a "less" control. As you would expect, the two added controls can interact to produce many shades of distortion.

that mod is more simply explained at having another 'volume' pot as the one in the guitar, in front of the pedal.

So a simple pot wired in series at the entrance of a pedal
- lowers the input volume to the user's liking, allowing for better control on the distortion produced by the pedal
- solves impedance problems linked to the pickup (if there is one, the input of the rat should theoretically be impervious to impedance problems)

which is exactly what i'd like to have in front of the rat, while i keep my guitar's output pot where i want it.

This remembered me kurt's question from 2007 on gearslutz:

also a related question: my guitars outputs are too high and i dont like how they interact with my distortion box (rat). can i use some kind of d.i. box like an atty or radial jdv to sculpt how the guitar feeds the distortion box?

...

i also am playing a new guitar and i want to have some flexibility with how it affects the RAT pedal. i have a feeling that its not only a question of volume but also of impedance or ohms from the pickup.

i think the solution might ultimately be different pickups, but for now i want a work around. i dont want to just lower the volume knob.

So in case it helps, i think it might be as easy as doing the mod i just mentioned. Of course i haven't tried it myself (yet) and i have about one thousand other pedal related stuff i want to do before that (babies makes you late in every personal project you had).
But it think it would be worth trying and it could be as simple as using a simple pot, crocodile 'cables' and 2 jacks and put info in front of the rat, or have someone do the mod for you, or ask someone to build a rat with this mod.
I know i'll try this when i'll build one for myself, with a few other mods to make the pedal more useable in a 'jazz' situation.

Anyway i guess the question is completely out of scope now that Kurts rig is digital but in case it's still helpful, and/or for the sake of intellectual curiosity i thought i'd share.

Peace
Arnaud

Ramon 13910@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi guys, does anyone have experience with this pedal (AH rocket), maybe thru a ss (Henriksen amp). It seems like a very versatile pedal, not just for the lead tone but in a few yt demos (taken with a grain of salt) it seems in particular to also have a very nice punchy and sparkly clean and defined sound even with low gain/od. Can someone enlighten me? I have a way old proco Rat that i like for OD but the AH Rocket´s clean sound is intriguing, ive been considering something like the Barb Eq to fatten up the Henriksen - yes, i am aware they are maybe night and day in terms of the idea/inteneded use of each pedal, thats why i am asking for advice, im curious as to if i can maybe get the best of both worlds + a little more with the AH Rocket. I recgnise a forum member (from jg.be) here being very pleased with the barb eq, i heard some samples too and they sound nice but i am really keen on someone sharing their ss amp/AH Rockett experience, if any.
Thanks.
Oh, i am new here btw, great forum.

add4 13750@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hello guys,

so i've stumbled upon a recent bootleg of kurt (Village vanguard, 24-06-2014) and i'm curious about his sound. It's one of the best tone i've heard from kurt, especially lately (i found the distortion on star of jupiter and our secret world less smooth and appealing as on the previous records for example).
This time Kurt's soud has
- an attack decay on almost every note. is that still coming from the Hog?
- a really clear, resonant sound in the medium highs that makes it warm, yet ringing and bell like, i really really love that and i'm not sure it can come from the rat with the filter pot activated. si it still a rat, or is it a distortion from the axe fx or the kemper?
- smooth, singing, not hairy at all distortion. again, what does this.

i'm curious about all the always on effects kurt used to have (phaser, tremolo, compressor, etc) are they still included in his axe fx signal chain?

Following his gear choices is much more complicated now that he's digital all the way, we soon will have to find a way to hack into his axe fx to have an idea of what he's doing (or ask questions during a masterclass, but it's a less fun approach).

So, what's making the attack effet, what's doing the distortion, is the resonant clear sound coming from the guitar? pickup? effect? amp or amp sim?

speaking about the music, kurt's technique seems to never stop improving, his fast lines are so smooth it's actually scary (and absolutely beautiful). He's just getting better and better. Incredibly inspiring to hear someone playing like that still evolve at such a pace.

Peace

surfinboy 13433@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Briefly I had a Zendrive a few years ago and thought it was underpowered and overpriced, although I think Lovepedal is making them now - perhaps the newer ones have more output. I also tried a Timmy on a few gigs - reasonably priced but I found it underpowered too - I had to really crank it just to achieve unity gain. But I'm in the minority - most people love that pedal. I've never tried the LTD Drive but I think Barber in general makes great stuff, and their prices are reasonable. I think the LTD is discontinued.

Sometimes I also use a compressor to smooth out overdrive/distortion tones - it removes some of the harsh transients. I use an Xotic SP compressor and I love it for clean stuff too. (Barber makes a nice compressor too.)

These days I use a Mesa-Boogie amp and get all the dirt from the amp. By its very definition the clipping is more amp-like. Keep in mind most pedals are designed to imitate via transistors the sound of a tube amp. Lots of people get great results from Tubescreamers too - they didn't work for me, but other people get great sounds out of them - it's hard to argue with success. I've bought and returned lots of dirt pedals over the years. Listen to sound clips online (prymaxevintage.com and proguitarshop.com have some great demo videos). See what grabs your ear, buy something, give it a fair shot on a couple gigs/sessions, and be prepared to return it if you don't like it rather than letting it take up space and keep you from getting something else.

It's too easy to second-guess tone - especially overdrive/distortion. Everyone's got an opinion and there are too many choices on the market. What the audience is hearing is totally different, and a pedal will sound different live vs. on a recording. I used to worry that my guitar sound didn't have enough bass to it, because I do a lot of playing/practicing by myself and I want to hear the whole spectrum. But in a band context, it's good to drop some of the bottom out and not get in the way of the other instruments. Lately I've tried to remove myself from the sound equation a bit and stop being a p*ssy about less than perfect sound. Set it and forget it!

sam 13424@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have the ocd and use it quite a bit. If you use it with the drive turned way low and the down a bit behind noon, it sounds excellent for jazz playing, though I use a twin reverb (and often a DD7). I don't know how it would sound with the polytone. If you left it on all the time and rolled back your guitar volume for chords, it sounds pretty clean. Are you playing through an archtop type guitar or more electric?

surfinboy 13417@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
The problem with a lot of dirt pedals is that even at their lowest gain settings, they impart a harsh clipping/transient effect that I don't care for - the full range isn't very usable. But there are a couple I've had excellent luck with - they're well made and reasonably priced. I've had a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 for years and love it for just a little bit of dirt or warmth, especially on the comp-cut setting - it's a popular pedal for good reason. I also have a Barber Direct Drive that I like very much. It goes all the way from a totally clean boost, to a little bit of grit, to full on ballsy overdrive/distortion.

Chris 13363@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
If your looking for a booster, the RC Booster from xotic fx is great and moreno uses it.

If your looking for distortion the BB Pre Amp or the Maxon SD-9 are both amazing pedals.

The Empress Para EQ is also good and has a boost as well.

The Blue Sky Reverb is probably my next pedal to purchase. Sounds nice..

What are you using for delay and reverb?

aramaya 13355@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
yeah, my post came off different than what I meant. the TC HOF sounds good as well,
I just think it colors the sound more than the Nova Reverb. Also,
you can get a Nova reverb for about $125 on ebay or elsewhere, as they have
been discontinued recently.

jorgemg1984 13353@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I don't think eq pedals will achieve that sound... maybe a RAT at low gain low filter settings?

There are plenty of reverb pedals out there, for the price the TC HOF is a great option.

aramaya 13352@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I like the mxr 10 band eq as well. also, check out the joe meek floorq. It adds
a really interesting texture that is gritty. it boosts your signal whether the pedal
is turned on or not, kind of like how the moog pedals put a little extra signal on as well
even when turned off.

I really like the tc nova delay and reverb. check that out as well. it puts some of the
mids and lows back in the signal, rather then stripping them like many
delay pedals do. make sure you check out the nova pedals not the cheaper
HOF reverb or flashback delay, they sound different.

schwa 13346@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
It isn't just a boost I'm interested in-- I have a Fulltone FatBoost that does that very well. I want something to add a little texture to the amp, and a little sustain and grit.
