gleepglop_ 14401@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
No, it's not common.
To be honest, it sounds like there is something wrong with the guitar. Semihollow guitars are not normally any more difficult to play than hollowbodies or solidbodies.

First thing, it's important to be clear what tension is.
The angle of the neck does not affect string tension.

The "break angle" of the string at the bridge and nut can affect "feel" though not the actual tension. This mainly causes the string to feel stiffer close to the bridge/nut (if the angle is high). It's usually a fairly small effect—to the point that I don't think I've every really noticed it.

Actual tension is determined by the interaction of three things:
1) Mass per unit length of the string (roughly, how heavy/dense the string is)
2) Pitch the string is tuned to
3) vibrating string length (i.e., scale length).

Higher mass = more tension at pitch (assuming pitch and length are held constant)
Higher pitch = more tension (assuming mass and length are held constant)
Longer string length = more tension (assuming pitch and mass are held constant)

So, point 1: 12s are totally within normal tension for any standard hollow or semi-hollowbody and should not cause any problems for someone with decent technique. So the increased mass is not likely the problem, though I don't know what you were used to before. Most acoustic guitars have at least 12s on them.
Point 2: I assume you are using standard pitch, so this is not likely the issue
Point 3: I assume that it was built with a standard scale length between 24.75in and 25.5in. A 25.5in scale will feel a bit tense if you are used to 24.75in, but not so much that you'd feel like you're fighting the guitar. This might be a factor but probably not.

If you are used to light strings (11s or under) and a short scale, then the 12s and a 25+in scale might be enough to make you a little uncomfortable, but based on your description I don't think the tension really is the problem.

It does sound like probably the action is too high. This has nothing to do with tension in itself (an exception is if the tension is so high that it warps the neck, which usually takes months or years, and which really shouldn't happen with normal tuning, normal strings, and proper construction).

The truss rod does not adjust the action, only the relief in the neck. If the relief is correct, trying to use the truss rod to adjust the action will cause problems.

Based on your description, it sounds like the neck angle is nonstandard. If the angle is too small, this is why you can't lower the bridge any more to lower the action. I have a hollowbody like this (it was actually done intentionally, though), and it required a custom bridge that was lower than a standard bridge.

Without any more info, I'd guess that the only solutions would be to reset the neck at a standard angle or to make a custom bridge that was low enough to get decent action with the current angle.

Din 14394@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hello!

I got a new semihollow guitar in november, made by a guitar maker friend.
The guitar looks stunning and sounds very nice, but I'm having a difficult time playing it because of how much tension the strings have.
I have very good technique and with any other guitar I can play whatever I want, but with this one i'm very limited.
My friend told me that the guitar has a lot of tension on the strings because I'm using 0.12 and because of the angle in which the neck is joined to the body (which I think it's common).
I didn't thought this could happen when we were designing the guitar, I thought it would be able to be played like butter.
I never played a semihollow before, just 3 hollowbodies and their playing was super easy, even more easy than on solidbodies.

The action can't be lowered anymore on the bridge, maybe just a little from the neck truss rod.

What could be happening and what can I do to fix this situation? Is it common to have a SH that isn't easy to play?

Thanks!

docbop 14384@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I would like a chambered LP with P90 PUPs. The is the weight is why I want chambered, then LP can get muddy for my taste so I would like P90's for more note definition and punch. I did have a LP Deluxe a long time ago, but never got comfortable with it and sold it. I play Telecasters a lot, I like the body shape/size and they have the note definition and clear sound I like. I dig the newer Tele's with the 4 position switch the pickups in series sounds like a huge humbucker.

fakejake 14368@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have a Les Paul which I use for Jazz and I like it a lot. It has a great neck, lots of sustain and you cat get both a very thick sound from the neck PU alone as well as a bit more of a throaty/ honky sound from the middle position. People call LPs 'Telecaster on steroids' which for me sums up what a good LP should sound like.
The thing is that they#re heavy. Mine is about 3.9 kg which is light for a LP. I tried an old Yamaha once, the same model that Kurt uses, and it was backbreaking. 5 kilos easily

jarediledundee 14120@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your explanation, but I think those two chords do not contain the 4th, F (which some say is an avoid note).

If you're looking for a way to play modal with just two chords, you might explore slash chords (also known as triads over bass notes). For example, if in the key of C you want to play every note within the scale within two chords, play a major triad from the IV then the V, while placing a C in the bass...F/C and then G/C

You may also use minor ii and iii triads over C as well...D/C and E/C

These give you a modal sound depending which note is in the bass...some notes will be redundant, and some will be common seventh chords you already know

C Ionian:
F/C then G/C or D/C then E/C

D Dorian:
F/D then G/D or D/D (D-minor triad) then E/D

E Phrygian:
F/E then G/E or D/E then E/E

F Lydian:
F/F then G/F or D/F then E/F

G Mixolydian:
F/G then G/G or D/G then E/G

A Aeolian:
F/A then G/A or D/A then E/A

B Locrian:
F/B then G/B or D/B then E/B

ludovikbt 14118@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi,

I was recently playing with two voicings often heard in modern jazz : Maj7sus2 (In C : C - D - G - B) and Maj6/7 (In C : C - E - A -B). After analyzing the two of them, I realized that both chord contained every major and perfect intervals except the unison and the octave : 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7.

I think it's quite interesting since these chords sound great. Maybe that by knowing more about their structures, I might come up with new ones.

Anyway, my question is, do you guys know other chords or voicings that could contain every major or every minor intervals ? Or simply a mix of the two ? I'd like your help to expand this concept.

Thanks.

rjzol6c6e 13884@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hello schwa. Again as I stated before, the Fatboy has 24 frets so it pushes the neck pickup maybe and inch closer to the bridge which is going to decrease a touch some of the deeper lows, low mids being fed to the pickup by design. However, I believe the fatboy throws some of that back by resonating the strings themselves through actual vibration. The top feels likes its moving air although there is no f hole. Its a fast guitar transient but not as immediate as a solid body. Also there is a robust airy sound that is its own. I am not familair with much of Moreno but I do not believe the guitar itself is thin, but believe the guitar equipped with stock Holdsworth pickups it just too bright. Better bright than muddy, but I've changed the entire sonic spectrum on mine with the Harmonic design z90 pickups. These pickups increased the low end, kept the mid range intact, and also gives me the slicey but not harsh top end that single coils offer. If im playing a fusion type piece, ala Wayne Krantz, I can get there with the tone maxed,,,however if I shave it down slighty and change my attack and volume,,,,,wala ,,kurt territory. I have not had a problem with feedback, although it will feedback. It can contain itself at bar level playing and rehearsal playing( unless your turning the gain to super high levels, which doesn't appeal to me with a guitar of this type or any other for that matter) . Remember, pickup height, and tone cap selection as well as potentiometer choices are often very overlooked. I am sure many guitars have been scrapped or are sitting in cases screaming to get out and be played because of mix match choices. Hope this helps! Bob

Poparad 13850@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I used 250k pots and .047 MFD caps.

The neck pickup has a nice big sound to it. If you're going for the Moreno thing, I think this could get you in the ballpark.

For feedback, acoustically it's like any semi-hollow. Not as resistant as a solid body, but not as bad as a true hollowbody. I don't have issues with using it for louder rock contexts. I did have an issue with the pickups squealing (they're unpotted), so I did my own wax potting job to them and it fixed that up right away.

aramaya 13837@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Poparad, what pots and caps did you use? I have a Hofner very thin that I love playing but would
like to darken the bridge pickup a bit.

Poparad 13836@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I also play a Fatboy, and I love it. The above post is right: it's kind of it's own sound. It's got the warmth of a hollowbody, but the bite of a Strat. It is a very bright guitar stock, so I replaced the tone pots and caps with some lower values so I could darken up the tone the way I like. It's not going to sound as full and fat as a traditional 135 or 335 style hollow. A bit thinner, but also more focused and crisp than those guitars. I have a Gibson ES 135, and although I love the fullness, it can get tubby and muddy sounding too easily, especially in the low end.

The guitar is super comfortable to play. The neck is very fat, but in an ergonomic way. The entire fretboard is easy to reach, and it's a pretty lighweight instrument.

rjzol6c6e 13835@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hello schwa. I have a beautiful Carvin holdsworth fatboy guitar. I did not like the humbuckers that came with the guitar as I felt they were too bright . I put in some Harmonic Design z90 big single coils and its sounds great. You can mess with the tone caps to taylor your high end, or roll down the treble a touch to get more of a jazzier sound. As far as the box itself it resonates like crazy, because the back and the top do not touch the bracing at all except for under the bridge. Keep in mind that the neck pickup is closer to the bridge(24frets) than most gibson scale guitars but, it's a sound all its own worth checking out. I have not tried the newer semi guitars from Carvin. The hollowness of the guitar translates well through the pickups and is dynamic. Id check them out if you get a chance. I love mine. thanks

http://carvinbbs.com/viewtopic.php?p=547796#547796

schwa 13832@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hey, everybody,

So I've been getting closer to the sound in my head, but I am starting to feel like my guitar is getting in my way. For a long time, I played a 1967 Guild CE100D, and then started using a Strat with humbuckers (Dimarzio Air Classics) to get a more focused, modern sound.
Anyways, the strat feels kind of dead in some spots on the neck, and I don't know how much I like the long scale length. So I'm going to sell some gear and get a new guitar.

So, my question is:
1: Has anyone here tried any Carvin semi-hollows? I'm interested in the HF2 FatBoy and the single and double cutaway semis, and curious about the HH2 headless.
2. How different are semi hollow and solid body? can you get a good tone (I'm thinking Kurt, Mike Moreno, "that sound") from a solid body?
3: what other guitars should I be looking at ?

Thanks!

fakejake 13745@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Three instruments at the same time might be a bit too much.
Imagine learning French, German and Chinese all in parallel. Memory interference is going to happen.
Maybe, try concentrating on two instruments for some time, I'm quite certain this would help.

If you are committed in continuing with all three at once, try to schedule a nap in between practicing each instrument.
Sleep is extremely important for motor memory and will also give your brain some interference-free time to chew on things.
There are quite a few scientific studies showing that naps significantly improve motor memory consolidation.
Good luck!

Jason Sioco 13744@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
This topic is about playing large and difficult chords and changing chords on the guitar and piano.

I have a Beginning Jazz Guitar Book by Jody Fisher and I am going to quote him right now.

"...Some Classical Guitar instructors teach that these movements should be learned like a "choreography" for the fingers, or like a "play" for a football team."

"...Sometimes chords will get gradually easier, but I find most of the time the chord will suddenly "snap" into place. This will also take time so the key word here is patience."

They sound like promising words, but up to this point my muscle memory is still the same. It's slow.

For two months, I have been taking a Jazz Piano course at York University and I have difficulty playing some lush Bill Evans chords. I am so slow.
I am auditioning for Jazz Guitar next year and I am preparing two contrasting pieces for two months so far and I am also slow.
I am also auditioning for Jazz Woodwinds and I play much better on the Alto Saxophone.

Is this problem of mine just a muscle memory issue? Or I don't have potential at all on the piano and guitar.

I need to know some feedback so I can concentrate on the Saxophone. I am not quitting on the piano and guitar, it's just that I need to take more time with what I'm good at.

callum 13655@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I reckon just knowing lots of chord shapes in general probably helps. That and knowing lots of tunes, that way you can recognise longer chains of harmony, rather than just individual chords.

Those two things definitely help me in any case.
