Jason Sioco 13744@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
This topic is about playing large and difficult chords and changing chords on the guitar and piano.

I have a Beginning Jazz Guitar Book by Jody Fisher and I am going to quote him right now.

"...Some Classical Guitar instructors teach that these movements should be learned like a "choreography" for the fingers, or like a "play" for a football team."

"...Sometimes chords will get gradually easier, but I find most of the time the chord will suddenly "snap" into place. This will also take time so the key word here is patience."

They sound like promising words, but up to this point my muscle memory is still the same. It's slow.

For two months, I have been taking a Jazz Piano course at York University and I have difficulty playing some lush Bill Evans chords. I am so slow.
I am auditioning for Jazz Guitar next year and I am preparing two contrasting pieces for two months so far and I am also slow.
I am also auditioning for Jazz Woodwinds and I play much better on the Alto Saxophone.

Is this problem of mine just a muscle memory issue? Or I don't have potential at all on the piano and guitar.

I need to know some feedback so I can concentrate on the Saxophone. I am not quitting on the piano and guitar, it's just that I need to take more time with what I'm good at.

laruenickelson 12110@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I have only just begun working on it to be honest---it's a lot to go through and I have a lot of relearning to do. I would say if you could find an Alexander Technique Instructor it would be best but when I looked in my area there wasn't anybody close. If that is not an option then this book might be a good place to start. It is basically relearning how to play the guitar for me---which is frustrating but maybe will help my particular physical ailments . Also ---the tips about breathing are helping my time feel so that is an added bonus.

Nathan078 12090@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hey Floatingbridge thanks for the advise. Yes I do try to stay relaxed when I practice/play, I also use the classical footstool as well. I think it comes from not practicing the "right way." I get in about 5-6 hours a day, but until recently (I have talked to people about this problem) I would do 3-4 hour chucks at a time, non-stop. I think this is were most of it lies maybe? My teacher told me to take a 10 min break each hour of practice and stretch. So thanks for that new stretch, will help for sure! Alexander technique....man Juilain Lage uses that right? That stuff is hard core, but cool.

Floatingbridge 12089@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Unless there is something glaring and obviously wrong about your technique it can be tricky to try to assess what it is that you may be doing that is the source of injury. It can be hard to perform honestly as you normally would while simultaneously trying to objectively observe and discern what might be the source behavior that is causing you pain. The only thing I have found realistic is to be relaxed and to keep moving. I don't think there is one posture. I think you could get all scoliosis and using your bent ankle as a footstool for five minutes and it could feel great if you're allowing yourself to breathe and it's enabling you to reach and move as you wish . After a few minutes uncurling from that. Being fluid. Look into different straps . Don't fear the nerd session all the way to the top bow tie guitar strap height if that feels good , don't fear the John stowell cello vibes. Fear the strap to the knees curled in wrist rocker vibes. Yoga is great . Alexander technique can also change habits and bring awareness to everyday movements(... Although , when I went to see a guy I feel I was dishonestly doing my impression of good posture rather than playing as I often do ). A teacher I had that was feeling tendinitis ( which he seemed to think he got from gripping in too stiff a manner during mountain biking ?), showed me a stretch where he would stand in front of a doorway , hold his armss forward making contact with doorway, turn his wrists facing eachother and rest his fingers on the doorframe - making a little right ange at the wrist and hands, and he would lean forward and press or bounce in towards the door frame and this would stretch tendons in his forearm . If you raise you arms slightly you will feel it more on the ring finger pinky; if you go a little lower than straight out in from you get the pointer more.

Gesture 12068@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Since I need to work on my diminished lines in 251's I came up with an exercise based on yours.
It's basically the same but instead of playing chords I practice playing triad pairs that I then use in 4 different 251's like above.

So for example over a Dm7-G7-Cmaj7 I use 2 triads from the G H/W dim. scale, let's say an E triad(13, b9, 3) and Bb triad(#9, 5, 7). Then I will use the same ones over the other 3 251's where they will sound differently.

An interesting thing I found out is that combining triad pairs creates hexatonic scale patterns so you can sort of see them as scales instead of triads.

I like the fact that it is sound based (but of course also structure/pattern based), because I get more familiar with different tensions and resolving them into different tonics. Sandemose 12056@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hey guys, I´ll try to explain...

The basic idea is that I use two voicings, first the 7#9 as four different dominant chords depending on what root you have, and depending on what minor chord you put infront of it:

First G13b9, Bb13b5, Db7 (with alot of tension) and E#9

E--3----(1)-----(13)-----(b5)------(#9)
B--3----(5)-----(3rd)----(b9)------(7)
G--1---(b9)----(7)-------(5)-------(3rd)
D--2---(13)----(b5)-----(#9)------(1)

and then same thing with this 13b9 voicing...

E----4----
B----5----
G----4------
D----3----

After that I try to find nice IIminor7 voicings (Fm, Abm, Bm, Dm) close to these two diminished chords, and then resolve them into Imaj7. Then I move up the diminished chords minor thirds to find the closest IIm7 and Imaj7 chords. In each position I start to improvise lines around the chords until it feels familiar, also trying to sing the roots.

The whole idea is to use the same amount of information (the diminished voicing) as much as possible (as a G, Bb, Db, E dominant chord) and when I improvise with the half/whole dim scale I feel that I get more comfortable resolving it into four different tonics (C, Eb, Gb, A).

Hope this was any clearer?

Sandemose

What do you mean exactly by "Chord structures"?
And let's say you're working on 1 diminished scale (G H/W for example) in 1 position for 20 minutes. Do you just practice over the 4 possible II-V-I's in that position successively..? I'm confused. ;)

Sandemose 12046@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
It is based on the fact that the half/whole diminished scale can function as four dominant chords, starting on G, Bb, Db, and E. That gives four tonic chords (Cmaj, Ebmaj, Gbmaj, A maj) and four two-minor chords (Dminor7, Fminor7, Abminor7 and Bminor7). I work with two chord structures for the dimished scale (you can use how many as you like, I at least started with two) based on this pattern:

E---3----4-----6-----7------
B---3----5-----6-----8------
G---1----4-----3-----7-----
D---2----3-----5-----6----- etc

Next thing I do is that I go through different IIminor chord voicings, starting with Dminor sounds, then resolving into Imaj (Cmaj):

Cmajor

E--3---3---3------3-----4----3--------
B--1---3---3------3-----5----3--------
G--2---1---2------5-----4----5--------
D--3---2---2-------------3-------------
A-------------------5-----------7-------
E---------------------------------------- etc

Ebmajor

E----3-------3---(3)-----3----------
B----4-------3---(3)-----3-------
G----1-------1---(1)-----0--------
D-------------2---(0)-----0-------
A----3------------(2)-----1------- etc

I go through all four tonic chords (C, Eb, Gb, A) staying in one position, trying to find nice voiceleading moves, and at last trying to connect lines with these sounds. I stay with one diminsihed scale for 20 min. Then I practice the other two with their four tonic chords 20 min each. After that I have practiced/played II-V-I in all keys within an hour.

I posted this excercise on the old forum. Hope anyone likes it. Ask questions if Im unclear in any way.

Best regards,

Sandemos

Matt 11968@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
i find myself taking more risks when i start an improvisation more motivically, with a lot of pauses and more reflection on what i just played. i'm not sure how i would describe it, perhaps like a dual awareness that separates what i'm playing from what the form/harmony is; i find, in this state, i focus less on how the notes i'm playing relate to the tune and more how the phrases relate to one another.

It really takes the fun out of it.

Not really sure how to get out of that so i am interested in seeing what peoples response to this thread would be.

Matt 11938@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
"I'd like to put the call out to my fellow musicians: let us all vow to put ourselves at maximum creative risk whenever possible. In this climate, what do we really have to lose? If the experience enables us to say something authentic or to be more fully present in the world, then it will have been worth it—for ourselves and for others who are listening."

this is quoted from a vjay Iyer article at allaboutjazz.com. i'm wondering how you guys approach taking risks, or how you conceptualize it. in a modality so conducive for taking risks (improvisation), how can we free ourselves from our pre-conceived crutches and discover new sounds and ideas?

docbop 10847@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Here's some practice advice from my old bass teacher....

The three stages of practicing

Frist is the struggle to just get the notes right.

Second the ability to play the note correctly using complete concentration, went the mind wonders the music goes 'off'

Third stage is when the mind wanders the hands continue to play the correct notes.

When you reach the third stage continue to practice for a few days to "hard-wire" it in, then move on.

adamv 10845@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Thanks again guys for all your replies. I love that site jazzadvice.com that you mentioned miss marple. That site and this forum and smalls website are my favorite and check regularly. I like what you said jazzcast55 about your lesson with Kreisberg. I'm just using the tunes I am learning as a vehicle to practice everything for the most part. they have everything in them and then plus the recording, it has all the answers. This really helped me with my practice rut. thanks again guys. This forum is amazing and filled with amazing people full of great insight.

jazzacast55 10839@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Jonathan Kreisberg once told me in a lesson if you're are ever stuck with what to practice or have to pick one thing to practice, only one thing, he said it's always tunes.
If your not sure put on a cd and learn that head you have always liked or open the real book to anything and read it or improvise over the changes.
This happened to me last week, wasn't sure what to do so I thought I'll learn Hot House, always loved that tune, the version off the Quintet at messy hall recording.
By learning the head by ear I was covering ear training which then led me to realize I could use some work improvising over minor ii-v-i's which then led me to I haven't played What is this thing called love in a while, same type of chords next I realized I could use some more voicing for minor ii-v-i , even -7b5 chord alone and I also realized I don't use the super locrian (Locrin nat 9) much when thinking of minor-ii-v's which I could practice.
See by picking one thing I'm on a whole trip at the moment with minor ii-v-i's, improvising, chord voicings, the heads to Hot house and what is this thing called love, using different modes over each of the chords and listening to different versions of those tunes.
Big things have small beginnings my friend, one thing will lead to countless others things to practice.
One last thing, I think it was Kenny Burrel who said when he was asked what he practiced, he said something like "It changes from week to week , I practice things I'm not good at so it's never the same"
Hope that helps.

Gesture 10838@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I used to do an exercise in a Steve Vai lesson somewhere to improve my legato technique.
Just hammer-on/pull off with each combination of 2 (1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4) fingers for 1 full minute. Do it slowly, even and strong. After a while your fingers, especially your weaker ones, get a lot stronger.
