smoke 12778@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Rodney Jones picks the same way. I think Sheryl Bailey as well. I've tried it in the past but dropped it after a few months. You have to give up hybrid picking which is important to me so I went back to the way I used to pick. My technique was no better, nor my tone, nor my time, nor my penis length...

Way too many people picking all kinds of ways to wreck your technique based on how others do it. That was the lesson for me. It was a fun experiment when it didn't matter as much (early college) but no way would I scrap 20+ years of hard ass work now that I'm getting paid to play.

HlynurS 12776@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I don't feel any added tension in my thumb when I do it, as a matter of fact I feel like there's less tension overall and I'm able to be more relaxed when picking. Benson seems to bend his thumb back quite a bit while Adam Rogers keeps his thumb straight and his forefinger relatively straight as well and when I try to emulate that I feel really loose and relaxed while still being accurate.

I do feel like it has some distinct advantages at least for me, with the kind of pick I currently use (Dunlop JazzTone 204) if I use the "traditional" angle of the pick then the pick just kinda rolls over the string and it's harder to make distinct notes as I have to move the pick farther or even lift it up away from the strings to get a good note. With the kind of angle that Adam uses I am able to let the pick just cut through the string and rest on the string below without much effort and it helps with more distinct note seperation. Perhaps with other kinds of picks there might not be as big of a difference.

And yeah of course a lot of guys pick differently and still sound amazing, it really all just boils down to preference. Mike Moreno also has a peculiar picking technique as he holds the pick with 3 fingers and he sounds amazing doing it.

Matt 12773@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
that style of picking doesnt offer any distinct advantage overall: it's just the way those guys pick (rogers and benson). Kurt picks differently and he sounds great; Metheny picks weird and his tone is amazing! so i think it's all about what your ears hear. if you like it, go for it.

personally, i dislike it because i don't like to add the tension in my thumb to get the pick into position. i do like the sound of it though.

Gia5 12770@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I did. In some ways gives you advantages, better tone, a fattest note and sometimes more speed. But it can't cover all the aspects of playing, especially the rhythmic ones in non swing-situations. So, when the situation needs it, i switch to regular picking. It takes a very long time anyway, at least in my case.

HlynurS 12766@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I've been studying Adam Rogers' picking techique lately, it looks really effortless and efficient. I've googled around and it appears that people call it the "Benson technique" since George Benson turns his pick in that direction as well but I think Adam's technique looks a lot more effortless. It feels really wierd to switch to picking like this at first but I'm getting used to it. Having the pick at that angle makes it easier to separate the notes better with less effort, the pick doesn't have to travel as far to clear the strings. The tone also changes a bit and I think it sounds better when using this technique, the notes sound thicker.

Do any of you guys play with this kind of picking technique or have made the switch to this kind of technique?

Here are a few examples of Adam's right hand technique:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b0Kg6w95oc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0wPHaKit9s

Matt 2443@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
to reiterate - i think it is nearly impossible to play on the level Metheny, Scofield, Rosenwinkel, etc play on if you're tense. anchoring or not, since it seems that if a player does something and is good, it's a great idea...

Matt 2417@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
i don't think those players anchor [not to be mean, sandemose :)]. it can definitely look like it, but just 2 millimeters off the bridge/strings, and you're not anchoring. Also, resting your hand and anchoring are different - resting is without any tension, while anchoring is.

i think it is nearly impossible to play on the level Metheny, Scofield, Rosenwinkel, etc play on if you're tense.

Sandemose 2416@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I anchor my picking hand, and quite many Ive seen do that as well. Lage Lund, Gilad Hekselman, Scott Henderson, Pat Matheny doesnt (many more of course) I think. Jonathan Kreisberg seem to alter between anchorded and "fist" pick grip. Mike Moreno anchords, Kurt as well, Bill Frisell and John Scofiled (kinda?) also. Whatever works, isnt it so?

This is the perfect way to mix playing chords with pick and with fingers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzMKlQSpxlk

Best, Sandemose

Matt 2407@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
When i stopped anchoring my pinky, i noticed more free movement and fluidity of playing.
I think if you are as relaxed as possible, the sound and technique will work itself out. And by relaxed, i mean so relaxed you feel weightless. No Tension Anywhere.

animitta 2406@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Good question :)
I recently changed all my right hand tecnique, the pick, the way to keep the pick, the way in wich i pick. Everything started when i discovered that i could not play a single line and then a chord easily.

Before i was using a strange way to keep the pick ( with 3 fingers, thumb, first and second, in a similar way to Pat Metheny but with a thick pick ) and anchoring my palm on the bridge. I could play quiet fast but the sound ( too much bright ) and the difficulties to change from a single line to a chord made me think about that something was not working.

So i said to myself: " i need to change something in my tecnique cause is not working properly ". I started to keep my pinky anchored on the restfinger of my guitar and at first i found really difficult to play smooth as before...it took to me some mounths, almost 6, to feel a little better..but the problem was not yet solved...still my right arm and hand was not working properly and i have investigated what was wrong again..

I found that to keep the pick with 3 fingers and to anchor my pinky was good but not enought...and .....
So i said to myself, again: " i need to change something in my tecnique cause is not working properly " : )... then i changed the way to keep the pick, this time in a more conventional way, using just my thumb and my first finger but always anchoring my pinky...and i think i recently found a good balance...i will never pick fast as Jimmy Bruno but i can make what i need, single lines and chords...

Sometime i say to myself that the perfect way must be to pick really freely, as George Van Eps suggested, not anchoring the right hand...but it took to me so many times to feel comfortable with my new picking tecnique that when i tried to make some test with the hand free, i found myself in big big trouble...too much big problem....for now i think that, also if not correct, i will keep my picking tecnique...who knows what i will think tomorrow? maybe i will change everyhting again : ).

For me the most important thing playing is the sound ( sure... the rythm and the choice of note too ), the way in which i produce the sound...if the sound is nice ( at least for me ) and if i can make what i want and what i hear in my head, then my tecnique is ok...if not...i change....but be prepared, cause every change brings stress and disappointment...you need to deeply think if that is necessary...if you think it is necessary then make the change...otherwise keep your picking style...don't care about other player on youtube..find your own way to play...your own voice...your own sound...

Right hand is really important, cause it produces the sound, but left hand controls the sound and need a lot of attention too...

Hope it helps, at least a little

BTW: i still suck : )

All the Best
Animitta

g_2_the_izzo 2405@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
While watching a video on here the other day, I became aware of the fact that I use the fingers on my right hand to 'anchor' my hand to the guitar when I pick single lines.

I started looking around on the youtube and it looks like there are plenty of jazz guitarists who play with their right hand mostly free of the guitar (except maybe occasionally muting strings with their palm).

Anyway, is there an advantage to playing like that? I started working on it and I noticed that I'm not able to play anywhere near as fast and I'm much sloppier. I'm sure it will take sometime to get used to, so I guess what I'm wondering is: should I take the time to work on it? Is it worth it? Do you guys play like that?

Thanks,

Geoff.
