gleepglop_ 14276@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Both the D'angelico and the 335 are 24.75in scale, so I expect that's what Kurt prefers. I don't know what's on the fancier guitars like the Moffa.

No idea what strings he uses. I like Thomastik GB roundwounds (.012-.053") with the wound third (.020") myself, but you're right it's not good for bending. A bit easier with the Thomastiks than with D'addario or other brands though. Their wound strings are less dense somehow at the same gauges. Price on these has gone through the roof lately though—not sure why as the Euro is near parity with the dollar now.

joegold 14275@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hi

First post here.
Big KR fan.

I see on this forum that the general consensus is that Kurt uses round-wounds gauged .012" thru .052".
I was just wondering if anybody here knows whether he uses a plain G string or the wound .024" gauge G string that comes with this set from D'Addario?

Lorne Lofsky, Ed Bickert and myself all use similar round-wounds and gauges but swap out the wound 3rd for a .020" plain 3rd.
I think Ed might have started doing it that way because he was trying to mimic Lenny Breau's tone.
Lenny was probably doing it because it's more similar to the way that classical and flamenco guitars are strung.
Lorne probably started doing it that way to mimic Ed's tone.
I'm also trying to mimic all those guys to one degree or another but I also like to bend strings, and that's the main reason I'm doing it myself.
I actually prefer the sound of a wound G string but it puts the kibosh on any bending of that string.

Also does anyone here know the scale length that Kurt uses on his most-played guitars, e.g. the D'angelico?

Any info appreciated.

Thanks!

silverwater 10040@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
One more thought: If you're always leaning on the 3rds and 7ths, practice lines avoiding either one or both. I know I had a thing where I always played the 3rds over the VI7 and the V7 chords in RCs, so I started to practice lines while consciously staying away from them. Use other degrees over the those dominant chords like the b9, #9, b5, 5, b6, and 6th.

silverwater 10039@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
A few random points:

You can outline the changes or just play stuff in Bb (or Bb blues). However I think it can sound a bit square if you do either one exclusively.

If you want to outline the changes there's no time to be thinking about scales and shit over that A sec, just use degrees etc. For learning to play the changes transcribe and/or check out some books with written out solos like Joe Pass's "guitar styles" book or Joe Diorio's book about rhythm changes, and of course the Omnibook.

Rhythm changes are all about creating tension and resolution...when soloing up tempo you can think of the A chords being: :Bb :F7 :Bb :F7 :Bb7 :Eb :Bb :F7 : (Other A secs would have F7--> Bb for the last two bars)

The nice thing about Thomastik is that they feel softer than a comparable gauge from most other brands, which if you are used to playing 9s might make you more comfortable. I wouldn't use anything less than 11s on an archtop (even a thin or semi-hollow).

senggedorje 8517@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I'm new to the forum, and I guess I have the newbie question that folks will often ask of a pro: does anyone know what gauge strings Kurt prefers to use on his D'Angelico guitar? I just picked up a D'Angelico EX-SS and I'm wondering what strings to put on it. It's my first hollow body guitar, I'm a long term Fender Tele/Strat guy, who prefers 9's on those guitars, but I'm wondering if heavier or even much heavier strings are better on a slim/ hollow body guitar. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, SD

JorgeRubiales 4815@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Yes, the action is measured from the bottom of the string to the top of the fret, it doesn't make sense to measure it in any other way since that it the distance you have to push the string, and it's independent from string gauge or fret size.
