callum 13655@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I reckon just knowing lots of chord shapes in general probably helps. That and knowing lots of tunes, that way you can recognise longer chains of harmony, rather than just individual chords.

Those two things definitely help me in any case.

jorgemg1984 13654@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I do an exercise on the piano that helps... Play an x number of random notes in block (3 minimum). Try to sing them by order and then check by playing them one by one. This has helped me hearing inner voices beitter... bass and top notes are easy to hear, the middle ones are tricky :)

Pauli Poulsen 13653@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Basically what Poparad said. Listen a bunch of times. Pick out individual notes the stick out (usually the bottom and top notes will be the most obvious). Then play some educated guesses until you have something that sounds like a match.

Poparad 13652@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Step 1: Bang head against wall repeatedly
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Chords!

Just like transcribing solos, there's not much secret to it other than just doing it. A lot. Your first attempts will be awful and mostly wrong, and it will slowly get better from there.

I try to hear the bass note first (even if the piano or guitar isn't actually playing it, just to get my bearing for what type of chord it might be), then the top melody voice of the chord. From there I try to match the quality I'm hearing, but not the specific voicing (like maj7 vs dom7 vs m7, etc). From there, I'll try and get closer still. If I hear any particular notes jump out, I'll write them down. I'll try out different voicings and extensions until I find something that sounds like a match.

Jason Sioco 13651@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I am taking Jazz Piano lessons at York University and my teacher and I are also doing ear training in my music lesson. My assignment is to transcribe “My Romance” by Ella Fitzgerald and “Barbados” by Charlie Parker. He expects me not to just transcribe the melody, but to know the chord voicings by ear. I am not getting marked on it, but it’s something I would love to do for the rest of my life. I have no experience transcribing chord voicings. It’s something I have never done before. Is there a step-by-step procedure to transcribe it systematically?

silverwater 6621@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I also make changes when transcribing, and not always because I felt the player intended to play something differently. Sometimes I just think it could have been better, to my taste, if it had been played a different way.

If the reason for transcribing is to improve your playing by getting some fresh ideas in your ears and under your fingers, then just do whatever you think will further that goal.

Floatingbridge 6587@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Think about the function of your transcription. If it is to improve your skills for notation then go far. There are limitations in notating things accurately any ways. If its not to communicate it to others and it's to get the ideas nder your fingers ( and the notes are correct ) maybe you have it down enough.

I do all my transcribing in Finale.

jorgemg1984 6366@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Yes! When you have a subV with a II like Abm7 Db7 going to Cmaj7 you have two approaches: if you keep it melodic minor / lydian dominant it's like playing G7 altered. Some people when they add the Abm7 they play dorian / mixolydian to give a little extra color - Wes is a great example of this. Both options are available :) (you can even treat the Abm7 as dorian and the Db7 as lydian dominant as I think I heard Kenny do)

Floatingbridge 4482@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
im doing this from youtube and the baby is still up so its hard to get everything now. also, its tough for me to discern between delay and a softer secondary attack. i wont deal with the rhythm but here is my guess as to what happens after the E7if you've been checking this out a bunch then perhaps some of this may be helpful.
•d on( g string)
•minor 3rds ( on highest strings [GbBb sliding to FA}
•Ebmaj7: from on lowest 4 strings (low to high: Bb,Eb,G,D)
•Bbmaj7#5: middle finger Bb on low E, A D F#( on strings 234 with ring finger ); later swapping out #5 for 13(G with pinky on strng2 )and then adding A on high E to this with first finger
•then( it feels like) Ebmaj7 (the typical middle 4 string root position drop 2 of: (low to high)Eb Bb D G, using 1st 3rd 2nd 4th fingers; only there is the Bb on the low E ( i feel like this is done with a barre of 1st finger but i have seen him curl his thumb over the top and he could be doing this too). however i feel its the barre because after a couple times ( again kind of muddled on youtube or my mind) the G is no longer the highest voice-instead the Bb on the high E appears in this chord. during this i hear a very faint proof that low Bb has been released from the bottom of the voicing and an almost muted low E appears instead.
• finally, B7#5#9 ( with its tritone the low E in the bass appears... voiced : open low E and ( from low to high on the highest 4 strings- using fingers1 22 4) Ab D F# C# happens before the band and melody kick in.
this is my guess of some of the chords involved and not in any way an attempt at an accurate run down, just a brief thing with no rhythm. hopefully this helps somewhat.
i need to get his albums again! i used to have this.
