Poparad 13489@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I think the key is 1) playing fewer chords and 2) finding the right voicing that's easy to get into for a particular melody note, considering the notes you have to play leading directly into it.

jazzbum 13485@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
Hey all. I've been coming back the guitar recently, after a somewhat difficult year for me and music, and have found a strong renewed interest in chords, Kurt of course being a primary inspiration.

I've realized that while I have spent quite a bit of time working on legato single lines, my chordal playing is somewhat choppy in comparison.

I know Van Eps is the answer, but I am having a hard time distilling all of his vast knowledge, and some of those fingerings (barring with 2 especially) are killing me.

Any recommendations on applying his ideas to tunes, or any other resources that are a bit less dense for working specifically with the phrasing of jazz chords on guitar? I've got the grips, but not the flow....

jazzbum 1684@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I was listening to Kurt's NGW clinic today again and his chord melody of These Foolish Things really amazed me. To have a chord on every beat with melody just shows how much the guitar can do harmonically. He says something before the example about being kind of like stride. Youtube has this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHE6FSeWuLQ

If that doesn't sell you on buying all of the van eps method books I don't know what will. Any other ideas or comments about translating stride piano to guitar would be awesome. :)

Anonymous 183@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
That's a good question, I'd be curious to know more about it myself...gotta get that book. I think a lot of it is up to you in terms of how to use the information. Nobody can tell you how to be creative, you know? I think you just need to try stuff out and see what feels good to you, what kinds of things you want to keep and what you don't. I don't think everyone uses all the info in all of those books all the time. Also, even Van Eps and Kurt repeat themselves, even if it doesn't sound like it. So basically, I think books like that and "Chord Chemistry" leave the process of experimenting and trying things out to see what works up to the student, because that is how the student will develop a personal vocabulary with the information in these books.

Just my perspective on it, hopefully it helps!

jazzbum 168@http://www.kurtrosenwinkel.com/forum/
I've been working with the first Van Eps book for a while now and wonder if anyone has devised a methodical way to apply his knowledge to specific tunes creatively. Chord melody has always been a challenge for me, at least making it sound not too forced or cliche. This is something I think Van Eps and Kurt really have mastered, having an open harmonic palette to draw from at all times. Choosing chords rather than playing specific arrangements is the goal. Any thoughts on this?

Side note: If you have not seen this video of Kurt playing Soul Eyes, his intro makes me weep. Check it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFKk7wxJxZk
