Hey, Id thought it would be fun to see/hear people here play. No competetion, no showing off, just how it is when we enjoy ourselfs while playing music. I recorded a video today playing Beutiful Love. Soundquality is quite bad. Poorly filmed (I had to put my cellphone in my bookshelf to film myself, but came out of frame except for my face (haha) but no guitar/hands visable), and I skrew up the form sometimes I think. But I thought that the take had some moments either way. I would love to see videos/or recordings with you guys. Also the staff (ACT shows us your chops!) or Kurt for that matter :)

I went to a clinic with Kurt yesterday and he gave a "sneak preview" of a new album he's about to release later this year -he played a few tracks off his ipod. He said it's not mixed yet and will sound much better when it's finished, but... man, this is gonna be one great great album! The music was so good that when he played the title track I couldn't stop smiling during the whole piece. Actually as I'm writing this right now I have goosebumps - just from trying to remember that song :-)

Hi guys,

Maybe it might be of general interest. I found a nice blog about jazz transcriptions. It`s held by the great teacher and guitarist Nick Fryer. He also publishes transcriptions made by other musicians.
Well, I hope it can be useful for someone.

See you,

I hope at some point in time Under It All gets officially released as an album that I can pay for. Until then, I will continue to enjoy the album.

What are the titles of the songs? Is anyone willing to share? I have never found titles for tracks 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10.

So I have developed a pretty extensive list of things to do for every new tune I learn, one of which is posing a bit of a problem - the listening to music part of it. What I've been trying to do is, for every new tune, listen to the original album it's from, and then listen to a couple other albums that have important recordings of that song. This is to solve my listening problem because there's so much music that I haven't listened to yet that I should have by now, a lot of important artists and albums. And I'm trying to listen to each album a couple times at least. The problem is I can't listen as fast-paced as I want to learn tunes, which isn't too big of a deal, but what is a big deal is that my tune list before I started doing this has 100+ tunes which I haven't done my necessary listening for..I've been trying to keep my practicing tunes and listening consolidated but it seems like the listening part is holding me back from moving on with tunes, and I just don't think I can find the time in the day to go through my tune list and do the listening, learn what I need to from the recordings (intros, important lines, things I'm doing wrong etc)...which I need to do, because there's a lot of songs I know but I don't really know the original arrangements...ideas?

I've always loved this tune, altough I never knew if it had a title.
All I know, is that is very well constructed and it sounds like it has a little of the Zhivago vibe in it :)
Will Kurt record it someday?

I've never heard opininions on band in a boxin this forum. i have bought the jazzpaks (not all of them) and i am amazed of its sound. for me it is a very good tool for study. you can play over harmonic movements with real band sounds, even you can practice fours with the drummer. the only problem is since they are not real vst's you cant asign a real sound to a midi melody. but the program are great. it creates comping and solos with real sounds on the style you have and is really easy to learn vocabulary because as you know you can slowdown tempo and transpose instantly. worth every penny. it s not a band or a play along but its great.
yeah i'm a biab fan. that jazzpaks are amazing

hope i am not being gratuitous, but yes, the search has started fermenting within me.
i need a new axe.
i currently have a Hagstrom Swede (made in'74/75) that i do want to keep, but it's limitations lie in the action and tone. i use .013s (which contributes, i assume) but i can not get a good treble tone nor a distorted tone. it is great for more straight ahead endeavor though.

so i am looking into a semi-hollow guitar, but i am not sure where to start. i have looked into D'Angelico, Gibson es-359, Ibanez artist series, and Hagstrom Viking, but i would appreciate some recommendations (esp. on the Ibanez, are those around? i havent found hardly any).
overall, i am looking for versatility, being able to play in most idioms and sound good. the setup and playability can be manipulated if needed by a luthier.

Hi!

I'm going to New York in the beginning of April, the 3rd to the 9th. I was hoping to get some tips on good jazz clubs to go to. I'll probably go to Smalls (still hoping Ari Hoenig or Gilad Hekselman will play, but they haven't announced act for april yet), but other than that I'm not sure.
Also I'd like to find a good place for effect pedals, and possibly to mod my Rat.

Any NY residents willing to share some tips?

Thanks

Hi!

I am looking for a good distortion pedal to use in some jazz gigs. The RAT would be my first choice since I love the tone a lot of guys can get out of this pedal (Rosenwinkel, Scofield, Monder, Frisell). But then you start reading those threads about modded vs unmodded, USA vs China, new chip vs old chip and its very confusing.

Whats your experience with RATs? Buying a USA version and do something like Alumns mods? Get the real 80s thing for a huge price? Or there are other pedals that can get you there?

Thanks!

I've never seen a great chapter on passing chords and I know every player has their own taste, but I thought maybe we could talk about some "basic" ways to apply passing chords throughout a standard and then get into some more colorful moves and/or reharmonizations... I hear Kurt use all sorts of passing chords (especially on ballads) so I would love for him or another expert to comment on this undefined topic. Also this can be a tag for any books or sources about Passing Chords or Reharmonization Techniques. Thanks!

Something extremely basic I like to do on say "All the Things you are" is to split the bar of Eb7 into a bar of Em7/Eb7 giving both chords two beats per measure: Fm7////Bbm7////Em7//Eb7//Abmaj7////Dbmaj7////Dm7//G7//Cmaj7//// ////

I know this next example could be over kill but its an exercise: Fm7//Cm7//B7//Bbm7//Em7//Eb7//Abmaj7//E7//Dbmaj7//A7//Dm7//G7//Cmaj7

i was reading an interview with Lee Konitz in Jazztimes earlier today and he mentions singing a lot, both in warm-up, practice, and performing. aside from him, a lot of non-vocal jazz musicians seem to embrace singing but i've never seen/heard anything concrete about how it is applicable. i know singing along with licks, solos, scales, etc, but is there anything else you guys do in particular or any other advice?

In general, will a semi-hollow have less of a tendency to feed back than a full hollowbody?

So I'm working on some bebop tunes, and I want to practice them in a way that I can play them trio, but it's rather tricky to throw in chords during the heads I'm working on (such as confirmation, donna lee, freight trane..). Does anyone have tips or ideas on practicing/combining chords with bebop heads?

I feel the pull of a lot of musical duties, and good transcribing has gone to the back burner for a while. I want to bring it back and get more mileage out of it. So the big questions I know many of us struggle with (at least I do) - I'll throw them out there and just would like to see what people have to share about their experiences:

- Notation vs. ear. I always try to do it by ear, away from the instrument more these days, but I'm working on a lead sheet in Finale as I go through the transcription.
- How do you break down a transcription task? Do you do a chorus at a time? A few phrases? Do you do the entire thing, or just a few bars? Obviously when I listen to a solo, there's usually a particular section or just a couple lines that really grab me. But I feel compelled to do the whole thing, because later on I may refer back to it because of something else in a different section.
- Because I'm a logical, organized, somewhat obsessive personality, I like to get the entire thing notated which, isn't the most musical per se, but at least I'm getting it documented. If another musical duty comes up I can always shelve it for later. For me, the learning/internalizing of the solo is a very long process, and I'd rather dedicate that as a separate process.

What are everyone's thoughts?

waht do you guys practice that you consider deep? and i dont mean 'man my bebop scales are so deep'. i guess i ask because i've been practicing long tones lately, just playing one note to every one or two clicks at 20bpm and trying to get my attack and tone just super consistent and it feels like i can spend endless hours doing this. it feels deep to me. what'd'ya'll got?

Kenny Burrell midnight blue B section. i have no idea what's going on someone can help or confirm this:

Db7 -- C7 -- F- -- Bb7 -- ¿¿¿¿ Bb-9 - Ab-9 ???? -- F- -- F- C7 --

I don't understand those two chords and the phrases in the improvisation adds more confusion to me. By now im playing dorian and melodic over those chords. give me a hand if you are familiar with the song, cause im sure im overthinking. sounds like if it were pretty basic but maybe im missing something

Hey all!
I'd be really interested in recordings of standards played by Kurt, on albums as well as on bootlegs.
I know which standards he recorded as a leader, but there should be plenty of stuff from sessions where he played as a sidemen.
Maybe we could compile a complete list here?
Cheers, Jake
