The new Ben Monder release Hydra is an amazing project unlike anything I've ever heard. The title piece alone is nearly a half hour long, through composed and made of several episodes within. There are little gems, like Charlotte's Song, deceptively simple and harmonically deep, pieces that use Theo Bleckmann's voice like a Bach chorale, and remarkably fluid metrically shifting compositional journeys.
Demanding, really rewarding, and I'm still trying to get to know it the fourth time through.
It will be available for release soon, if it's not out there now.
You can check it out here until the 27th:
It feels to me like a window into Ben's world. If you visit, you'll have to work but you'll see stuff you never imagined was possible.
